Halo Campaign Evolved Mission 3: Heavy Burden Walkthrough

by Team Respawn· ~10 min read

This is a Legendary co-op walkthrough of Halo Campaign Evolved Mission 3 — Heavy Burden. Below: ship-interior and gravity-lift tips, Seraph dogfight notes, lore asides on the prequel close, and where to grab this mission’s 3 skulls + 1 terminal, with the full video embedded above. Combat and presentation stay strong after Boarding Action and The Most Dangerous Game — Andy and Gus land on a strong B while still calling the prequel plot loosey-goosey as a Halo 1 lead-in.

Halo Campaign Evolved Mission 3 setup

  • Closes the three-mission prequel / bonus mini-arc — Andy and Gus still have not reached the main remade campaign.
  • Continues aboard the Covenant ship; Grunts appear in cloth / ceremonial-style garb (religious or cultural aesthetic).
  • Energy sword Elites remain a constant threat around corners — shotgun loadout helps in close quarters after earlier sword deaths.
  • Gravity lifts get attention: some go up, some down; the downward lift feels like being “smushed,” which they call a nice environmental touch.
  • Cutscene beat: data secured; squad reports to Lieutenant Williams while under heavy fire.

Mid-mission combat and ship push

Objective flow is clear hostiles, secure the hangar (“no Covenant left breathing”), regroup, then eliminate enemies around platforms and keep pushing through the ship. Gold-plated crates and ornate rooms stand out visually (“expensive budget in Forge mode”), with funky hanging fixtures dubbed “Las Vegas wind chimes.” Fuel rod enemies appear; Hunters remain high threat — fuel rods “will hold.” Watch for an Overshield pickup mid-run, and a needle rifle can drop on respawn after deaths.

  • Invisible wall / missed jump near a possible terminal area; Gus briefly spawns in thin air and dies.
  • Aggressive teleporting into enemy rooms before doors fully open — called out as a complaint (Halo 3 vibes for overuse of that pattern).
  • A Banshee sits nearby but is not pilotable — another complaint.
  • Hunter-skinned fuel rod looks especially good; hosts debate whether one player should keep default skins to see vanilla art.
  • Collectible heads-up: before the main bridge objective, peel onto the higher walkway for Eye Patch. After the data-download cutscene, Harmonious Clarity is behind the bridge-room back doors. Grunt Birthday Party is the purple-flame jump in the multi-floor gold atrium; Efficient is a timed jump off the moving platform later.

Heavy Burden skulls and terminals

This mission packs 3 skulls and 1 terminal. Andy and Gus mostly play through for combat and story commentary; the locations below fill in the collectible route so you can grab everything in one Legendary pass (order matches a natural playthrough; locations cross-checked against the Push Square skulls & terminals guide).

  • Skull — Eye Patch (Rally Point Alpha / Best Served Cold): When you reach the bridge packed with enemies, do not cross it for the objective yet. Continue along the path you are on (or take the door across from the door you entered) onto a walkway higher than the bridge. Follow it to the other side — the skull is on the ledge to the right of the locked door.
  • Terminal — Harmonious Clarity (Rally Point Bravo): After the cutscene where you download the data, you regain control in the bridge room (big planet hologram). On the bottom floor, leave via the unlocked doors in the back, pass through to an armoury, go through the next door, then check the left side behind the pods — the terminal is there.
  • Skull — Grunt Birthday Party (Rally Point Bravo): On the way to regroup with Williams and the UNSC survivors, you enter a multi-floor room from the top that is packed with enemies. Drop left one level to the platform below, get on top of the nearest purple flame pit, and sprint-jump across to the rock / stone pillar formation. Land on the flat surface below the skull, jump in place, and grab it (you will not stand on the very top).
  • Skull — Efficient (Rally Point Charlie / Tunnel Vision): In the moving-platform section, get off to restore power, then ride again. After the room with a bridge overhead, the next room is the pickup. Jump off onto the platform on your left just past mid-room, then sprint to the back-right corner by the locked door — you only have about 10 seconds before the out-of-bounds timer. Grabbing the skull still counts even if you die afterward.

Presentation notes

  • Gus notices a subtle film-grain / film-overlay look; settings check finds no dedicated grain toggle — attributed more to art style / DLSS / upscaling than a separate option. The game feels snappier with less upscaling aggressiveness.
  • Unreal Engine 5 stutter is not noticed here (contrast with Oblivion Remastered, which they call badly stuttery).
  • Praise for interior combat presentation — shield particle detail and close-quarters look remind them of early Halo Infinite interiors done right.
  • Less music use than expected in stretches of the mission.

Seraph sequence and space combat

Late mission shifts into piloting a Seraph — the spectacle highlight of the three prequels. Missile / fuel rod fire is available, barrel rolls work, and left-stick throttle can speed up or slow down (with a bit of Seraph transform animation). You fly through debris of destroyed human ships while Covenant send wounded out on dropships/Spirits and Banshees mix into the fight. Seraphs have shields — break shields first, then finish them. Protect friendly craft while dogfighting; UNSC ship turrets fire back. Visual highlight: kill a ship and fly through purple particle debris.

  • Cutscene line from Johnson — “missions change, they always do” — called out as the same phrasing Chief uses in Infinite (with the Pilot), framed as Chief echoing his friend. Andy applauds the humanizing callback; easy to miss.

Ending, lore, and franchise asides

  • Closing beat involves The Burden of Proof; a foe escapes with an impulse-drive signature — “for now, stay on mission.”
  • Hosts read this as setting up a villain for a future game rather than a self-contained prequel payoff.
  • Critique of the bonus missions as a Halo 1 prequel: a Prophet you never see again, tech you never see again, and a map that points toward High Charity rather than the ring — fun to play, oddly placed.
  • Broader franchise worry: remaking the original trilogy could delay Infinite’s resolution for years.
  • Credit to Halo Studios / 343 for the books and for stewarding Halo Wars 2 (Creative Assembly built it); criticism that post-2020 handling left Halo Wars 2 neglected.
  • Gameplay compared favorably to Halo 5 — not the “10/10” some reviews claimed, but sound combat.

Heavy Burden walkthrough takeaways

Mission 3 is the strongest spectacle of the three prequels — gravity-lift ship fighting, polished interiors, and especially the Seraph dogfight over wreckage. Story remains the weak link: forced mini-arc setup, an escape that telegraphs future DLC/sequel bait, and a tenuous connective tissue to Combat Evolved. Both hosts land on a strong B: funny Johnson lines, a meaningful Infinite dialogue callback, cool Covenant remix (looks, one new enemy), and interesting gameplay twists — worth playing, oddly placed as a Halo 1 prequel. If you are hunting collectibles, Eye Patch is the easy miss before crossing the bridge, Grunt Birthday Party is the fiddliest jump, and Efficient is the timed out-of-bounds sprint off the moving platform.

FAQ: Halo Campaign Evolved Heavy Burden

Is Heavy Burden a prequel mission?

Yes. Heavy Burden closes the three-mission bonus / prequel mini-arc in Halo Campaign Evolved. Like Boarding Action and The Most Dangerous Game, Andy and Gus have not reached the main remade campaign yet in this run.

Is there a Seraph / space combat section?

Yes. Late mission puts you in a Seraph with missile / fuel rod fire, barrel rolls, and throttle control. Dogfight over wreckage while protecting friendlies — break enemy Seraph shields first, then finish them. It is the standout set piece of the three prequels.

What grade did Andy and Gus give Heavy Burden?

A strong B. Combat, interiors, and the Seraph sequence earn praise; the prequel plot (escape setup, High Charity-pointing map, tech that never returns) is the main knock as a Halo 1 lead-in.

How many skulls and terminals are in Heavy Burden?

Three skulls (Eye Patch, Grunt Birthday Party, Efficient) and one terminal (Harmonious Clarity). Eye Patch is on the higher walkway before the bridge; Harmonious Clarity is behind the bridge-room back doors after the data cutscene; Grunt Birthday Party is a purple-flame jump to a stone pillar in the multi-floor atrium; Efficient is a ~10-second sprint to the back-right corner after jumping left off the moving platform.
