Halo Wars Nutritious Edition Mod: Subtle Upgrades Tour

by Team Respawn· ~5 min read

Nutritious Edition sits in a different lane from the bigger overhaul mods I have covered for Halo Wars: Definitive Edition. Made by Lord Nutritious—with assets credited to TheRealSlimLady—it edits units and mechanics from the base game, adds roughly 35 new units and weapon types, and introduces one new UNSC leader, all while keeping the overall experience recognizable. In our Nutritious Edition mod video, I jumped in as Captain Born to see what a lighter-touch mod feels like in skirmish—and there is still plenty here worth unpacking.

What is the Nutritious Edition mod?

The mod's own description nails the pitch: change the game up by editing units and mechanics while adding new content to make the experience new but familiar. That is a fair summary of what you get on the battlefield. Supply pads and turrets build faster, training times are shorter, infantry moves quicker, more units fit in garrisons, and all infantry can garrison structures. Air units no longer die instantly to Cryo Bomb. Population values are rebalanced. A new UNSC base type rounds out the systemic changes.

Compared to something like All the Units, which pushes toward a different game entirely, Nutritious Edition is closer to a quality-of-life pass with creative extras layered on top. It only affects skirmish and multiplayer—not the campaign—so if you want a refreshed multiplayer sandbox without leaving vanilla Halo Wars behind, this is aimed at you.

Captain Born and reworked UNSC leaders

For the video I picked Captain Born, the mod's new UNSC leader—and yes, the character design is deliberately meme-heavy. The leader unit is Ashen Team, the unique unit is a Conquest Warthog, and the leader power is the Mjolnir Mac Blast. Special Spartans on the roster include Lucas, Ace, and Anno, each with their own spin on the classic Spartan line.

Captain Born is not the only leader touched. The mod also reworks existing UNSC leaders—Cutter, Forge, and Anders all get changes, and the mod can replace random UNSC leaders in skirmish. There is easily enough variation here for follow-up videos on each leader; Captain Born was just the starting point.

  • Ashen Team: The Captain Born leader squad that anchors your early army.
  • Conquest Warthog: A unique vehicle tied to the leader's identity.
  • Mjolnir Mac Blast: A heavy leader power in the same spirit as the Elephant's MAC from vanilla.
  • Spartan Lucas, Ace, and Anno: Named Spartan variants with distinct loadouts.
  • Vanilla leader reworks: Cutter keeps Mech Warrior Spartan Lucas and the Elephant Mac Blast; Forge's leader unit becomes Forge and Spartan Anno.

New units, bases, and base building

The skirmish opens with a Silverback—essentially a Cobra chassis with an Elephant gun mounted on top. It is a heavy scout that can gather supply crates, slower than a Warthog but packing serious firepower. From there the roster expands in directions vanilla Halo Wars never went.

  • End Dave: Not an Elephant—a mobile base unit that can deploy specific building types to aid conquest, including a Supply Elevator.
  • Private Abigail von Becker: A support infantry unit who patches up other units and collects supplies extremely quickly.
  • Watchtower: A garrisonable structure that boosts line of sight—something I genuinely wish had been in the base game.
  • Rhino Turret: A deployable turret with excellent range; cheaper turret costs make fortifying your base more practical.
  • Firebase / Siege Base: Expanded base types with up to eight turret slots, including garrisonable watchtowers.
  • Commando Marines: Elite infantry with grenade launchers.
  • Jetpack ODSTs: ODST squads with jetpacks—the J stands for jetpack, and yes, they are as cool as that sounds.
  • Mjolnir Scorpion and Rocket Hog: Heavy vehicle options that hit hard in the mid game.

Building sites can appear on the map in standardized locations, similar in spirit to the expandable base ideas in other HWDE mods. The Supply Elevator deploys from your End Dave and drops right where the unit is stationed—useful once you have the infrastructure to support it.

Air support, ODST heroes, and tech upgrades

The air pad adds a Rescue Hornet—a support variant that heals nearby units, playing similarly to the Nightingale from Halo Wars 2. Standard Hornets, Vultures, and Pelican Gunships round out the roster. Pelicans can deliver Spartans to the battlefield, which never gets old to watch.

  • Sergeant Rusk: A seasoned ODST hero unlocked through the air pad—drops in with a rocket launcher and can commandeer friendly vehicles.
  • Adrenaline: A Spartan upgrade that dramatically boosts movement speed—watching a boosted Spartan squad sprint across the map is a highlight.
  • Deflector Armor: Vehicles gain a chance to deflect small-arms fire.
  • Premium Connection: Reduces leader power cooldown times.
  • Target Locator: Calls in support fire on a marked position.

Private Becker's healing is fast enough to keep a battered army in the fight during sustained pushes, and the Rhino Turret's range lets you cover approaches you would struggle to defend in vanilla. Needler Ghosts and other Covenant tweaks show up on the enemy side too—the Brute Chieftain even gets a proper icon, which arguably should have been there from the start.

Subtle improvements vs. total overhaul

What stands out about Nutritious Edition is the design philosophy. Other mods in the HWDE scene pick a specific focus—massive unit rosters, new leaders, faction swaps—and run with it. This mod spreads its changes across quality-of-life tweaks, a modest new unit count, and leader reworks without trying to replace the entire game. If you want something different but not overwhelming, it hits that sweet spot.

If you want the opposite end of the spectrum—a campaign-focused UNSC overhaul that turns the game into something almost unrecognizable—All the Units is the one to try. For leader-focused faction reworks, see our Leader Overhaul mod tour. I am planning more coverage on both of those as well.

Worth a look if you are into Halo Wars 1 or modding

The HWDE modding community keeps finding creative ways to extend a game whose official multiplayer browser has never quite matched the ambition of its design. Mods like Nutritious Edition are a big reason Halo Wars: Definitive Edition still has a pulse on PC years after launch. Lord Nutritious asked me to cover this one, and I am glad I did—it is a pleasure to play, and there is enough leader variety left unexplored for follow-up sessions.
